AlmightyAllahalso revealed

" And surely,We created you (yourfatherAdam) and then gave you shape (the

nobleshapeofahumanbeing),thenWetoldtheangels,"ProstratetoAdam",

and theyprostrated, exceptIblis, he refused to bethosewhoprostrate. 

Allah said: " Whatprevented you (O Iblis) that you didnotpostrate when I

commandedyou?" 

Iblissaid: " I am betterthan him (Adam),You created me from fire and him Y ou

created fromclay."

Allah said: " O Iblisget down from this(Paradise),itisnotforyou to be

arroganthere. Get outfor you areofthosehumiliated anddisgraced."

Iblissaid: " Allow me respite till the Day they are raised up (Day of

Resurrection)."

Allahsaid:" Youareofthoseallowed respite."

Iblis said: " BecauseYouhavesent meastray, surelyI will sitinwait against

them (human beings) on YourStraight Path.Then Iwillcome to them from

before them and behind them,from theirright and from theirleftandYou will

not find mostofthemas thankful ones (theywill notbedutiful to You)."

Allahsaid:" 

GetoutfromParadise,disgracedandexpelled.Whoeverofthem

(mankind)willfollowyou,thensurelyIwillfillHellwithyouall." 

" And O Adam!Dwell you and yourwife in Paradise,andeat thereof asyou both

wish,butapproachnotthistree otherwise you both willbe oftheZalimeen

(unjustandwrongdoers)."

“Then Satanwhisperedsuggestionsto them both in orderto uncoverthatwhich

washidden from them oftheirprivate partsbefore,he said:" YourLord did not

forbid youthis treesaveyoushould becomeangels or becomeoftheimmortals."

Satan swore by Allah tothem bothsaying: " Verily Iam one of the sincere well

wishersforyouboth." 

Sohe misledthem with deception.Then whenthey tastedofthetree,thatwhich

washiddenfromthem oftheirshame(private parts)becamemanifestto them

and they beganto stick togethertheleavesofParadise overthemselves(in order

to covertheirshame).TheirLord called outto them saying" Did I notforbidyou

thattreeandtellyou,VerilySatanisanopenenemyuntoyou?" 

They said: " OurLord!We have wronged ourselves.If Y ou forgive usnot,and

bestow not upon usYourMercy, we shall certainly be of the losers." Allah said:

" Get down one ofyou anenemy to the other(i.e.Adam,Eve,andSatan etc).On

earth will be a dwellingplace foryou and anenjoyment,fora time." He said:

" therein you shall live,andtherein you shall die,andfrom it you shall be

broughtout(resurrected)." (Chapter 7:11-25 Qur'an).

WeimaginewhenAllahtheAlmi ghty decidedtocreateAdam:HeaddressedHisangelsandtold

them toprostratebeforehim.Hedidnotmeantoasktheiropinionortaketheiradvice,forHeis

abovethat.All ah theExal tedtol dthemthatHewasgoi ngtocreateavicegerenton theearth who

would have chi l drenand grandchi l drenwhowould corruptthe earthand shed eachother'sbl ood.

Thati swhythe angelssaid toAl l ahthe Al mi ghty: "W i l l You placethereinthose whowil l make

mi schi ef therei nandshedbl ood!"(Chapter 2:30Quran).

i twassai dthattheangel swerei nformedaboutthecreati on ofAdamandhisprogencybythej i nn

whol i vedbeforeAdam. Abdul l ahIbnUmar sai dthatthej i nnhadexi stedfor about2000years

beforeAdamandthen shedblood.ThereforeAll ah senton theman armyofangel sthatdrove

themouttothe depthsof the seas. 

IbnAbi Hatim n arratedfrom Ali j afarAl Baqerthattheangelswereinformedthatmanwould

causewi ckednessandshedbloodon earth.Itwasal sosai dthattheyknewthatnoonewoul dbe

createdonearthwhowoul dnotbewi ckedandshedbl ood. 

Whether or notthese tradi ti onsare correct,the angelsdid understand thatAl l ahwould create a

vicegerenton earth.All ah theAlmi ghtyannouncedthatHEwasgoi ngtocreateahuman bei ng

outof clay,thatHEwouldmoldhim andblowHisspiritintohim andthentheangelsshould

prostratebeforehi m. 

Abi Musa al Sha'arainarrated thatthe ProphetMuhammad (peace be uponhi m) sai d: "Al l ah

createdAdamf romahandful ofdusttaken fromdi f ferentl ands,sothechil dren ofAdamhave

beencreated according tothe composi ti onof the land.Therefore frommankind we have whi te,

red,bl ack and yell ow ones;we have good and evi l ,ease and sorrow, and whatcomesi nbetween

them."(Sahi hal Bukhari ). 

Ibn Masudandothercompanionsof theProphet(PBUH)sai dthatAll ah theAlmi ghtysent

Gabrielontothe earthtosaid thatAl l ahthe Al mi ghtysentGabrielontothe earthtogetHimclay

theref rom.Theearth sai d:"Iseekrefugei n All ah fromyourdecreasi ngmyquanti tyordi sf i guri ng

me."SoGabriel returnedanddidnottakeanythin g.Hesaid:"My Lord,thelandsoughtrefugein

Youandi tgranted."

SoAl l ahsentMi chael for the same purpose, and the l and soughtrefuge withAl l ahand itwas

granted.Sohewentbackandsai dtoAll ah whatGabri el hassai dbeforehim.Then All ah sentthe

AngelofDeath,and the land soughtrefuge inAl l ah,the angelsaid: "I alsoseek refuge withAl l ah

f romreturni ngwi thout carryi ngout Hi scommand."So hetookcl ayf romthefaceoftheearth

and mi xed it.He did nottake fromone parti cular place,butrather he took whi te, red, and bl ack

cl ayfromdi f ferentpl aces. 

TheAngel of Deathascendedwithit,Allahsoakedtheclay till itbecamesticky.ThenAllahsaid

tothe angels:

"Truly, I am going tocreateman fromclay. So w hen I havefashioned himand breathed into him

(his) soul created byMe,then you fall down prostrateto him." (Chapter 38:71-72Quran).

angelswentpasthi m.They were seized wi thfear bywhatthey saw, and Ibl i sf eltfear most.He

used topassbythe fi gure of Adam,buff eti ng it,whi chwould make asound li ke pottery.Al l ah

tol d us: 

"He created man (Adam) from sounding clay like theclay ofpottery." (Chapter 55:Quran). 

When theti medrewneartobreathethespi ri ti ntoAdam,asAll ah decreed,Hecommandedthe

angel s:"WhenIbreatheMyspi ri t i nto hi mprostratebef orehi m."Al l ahbreathedHi sspi ri t i nto

Adamandwheni t reachedhi sheadAdamsneezed.Theangel ssai d:"Sayal l prai sebel ongsto

Al l ah." Adamrepeated: "Al l praise belongstoAl l ah." Al l ahsaid tohi m: "Your Lord hasgranted

youmercy."Whenthespiritreachedhiseyes,Adam lookedatthefruitsof Paradise.Whenit

reachedhisabdomenAdam feltanappetiteforfood.Hejumpedhurriedly beforethespiritcould

reachhi sl egs,sothathe could eatfromthe fruitsof Paradise. Al l ah,therefore,said:

"Man iscreated ofhaste." (Chapter 21:37Quran). 

Andthen:

"The angelsprostrated themselvesall ofthem together.Except Iblis, he refused to be among the

prostrators.(Ch15:31-32Quran). 

Abu Hurairahnarrated thatthe ProphetMuhammad (PBUH)sai d:"Al l ahcreated Adamf romdust

after He mi xed the cl ay and lefthi mfor some ti me unti l i tbecame sti ckymud,after whi chAl l ah

shapedhim.AfterthatAllahlefthim till itbecamelikepotter' sclay.Iblisusedtogopasthim

saying'Youhavebeencreatedforagreatpurpose.'AfterthatAllahbreathedHisspiritintohim.

The fi rstthi ng intowhi chthe spiritpassed washi sey e and thenhi snose. He sneezed. Al l ahsaid:

"May y ourLordhavemercy uponyou,OAdam!Gotothoseangelsandseewhatthey would

say.' SoAdamwentandgreetedthem.theyrepl i edsayi ng:"Peacebeupon youandthemercyand

blessingsof Allah."Allahsaid:"OAdam!Thisisyourgreetingandthatof youroffspring."(Sahih

al Bukhari ).
